Surprised by Shoreline ? About Contact Downloads Our People 14 Neighborhoods 20 Miles to Most Top-Tier Schools So Fresh and So Green With Beach Not Your Dad’s Aurora More Bang for Your Buck Arts for All Car-less Commutes Paw-Friendly Parks and Rec Our People The culture and diversity of Shoreline is growing, with residents representing a variety of ethnicities, ages, incomes, interests, and politics. Mark Hinsaw, Shoreline City Hall designer, perfectly describes what’s happening in Shoreline in his 2015 article in Crosscut, “Seattle may be seeing a decrease (aka displacement) in certain population groups, but those folks are replenishing older, inner-ring towns that were, not too long ago, mono-cultural bastions of the white middle class.”… Closer Look Share this: Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window) 14 Neighborhoods We are not “just another suburb of Seattle.” We’re a city! And we have 14 well-defined neighborhoods to prove it. As you move through Shoreline, you’ll see signs that mark your entry and exit to the various neighborhoods, and if you look closer, you’ll find that the people, places, and parks make each truly unique. While some of this happened organically, a lot is owed to neighborhood leaders—a group of volunteers who prioritized the creation of community among their neighbors through organizing social events, coordinating Block Watch activities, implementing Neighborhood Mini-Grants projects, and sharing information through social media. It’s a snap to find out what’s happening in Shoreline neighborhoods, from food trucks to soccer Closer Look Share this: Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window) 20 Miles to Most A lot of folks think Shoreline is far away (hello Canada?!). Turns out we’re a whole lot more central than you think. If you head 20 miles as the crow flies in any direction, you’ll cover a lot of ground and reach most major destinations including Pike Place Market; University of Washington; Microsoft’s Redmond campus; Sea-Tac Airport; Paine Field/Boeing; Amazon’s campus in South Lake Union; multiple ferry terminals to points beyond; multiple hospitals (hey it matters); downtown Seattle, downtown Bellevue, and downtown Everett; nationally renowned museums and cultural venues; hospitals, and world-class shopping. And with all this in reach, it’s no surprise that there’s 1.1 million jobs and 2.1 million people within 20 miles of Shoreline. Both public high schools were recently completely rebuilt, creating inspiring learning environments for students and beautiful campuses for surrounding neighbors. Understandably, Shoreline Schools recently limited enrollment to only residents who live in the district. And don’t forget, award-winning Shoreline Community College and destination private schools such as The Evergreen School, King’s Schools, Shoreline Christian, NW School for the Deaf, and nearby Lakeside School! In Shoreline, the kids are alright. And we do this in more ways than just recycling (ahem, 2012 Recycler of the Year by the state Recycling Association). Our summer farmers market is part of our Healthy City Strategy, connecting Shoreline residents and visitors to fresh offerings from local farmers and artisans. And we’re really excited about our new director, Teri Wheeler, former rockstar Market Master of the Pike Place Market just down Aurora… Closer Look Share this: Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window) With Beach Our best kept secret is probably the 3.4 miles of Puget Sound shoreline surrounding Richmond Beach. In a region of breath-taking views, this one stands alone. Back in 1952, a beach patrol was enacted to enforce an 11 p.m. curfew in an effort to rid the area of rowdiness. Today Richmond Beach Saltwater Park has moved past its wild ways (for the most part) and offers the community a place to play with family, friends, and fur babies – even in the winter. When you enter Shoreline from either north or south, you’ll realize it’s not your dad’s Aurora. Rebuilding the vital north-south corridor was a community goal since the city incorporated in 1995. Over the past 20 years, we redesigned and redeveloped all three miles of Aurora for 21st Century Shoreliners to enjoy improved traffic flow for cars and transit; beautified streetscapes; safer bike and pedestrian pathways and crossings; access for individuals with disabilities; nighttime visibility; stormwater quality and management; and economic investment potential. As a result of these improvements, Shoreline has seen a 56 percent reduction in accidents with injuries, and we expect it will only get better! Oh yeah, we also won numerous national, state, and regional awards for the project to add to our growing trophy case. But it’s more than just the price range that’s important. Shoreline offers a range of home and yard sizes, from starter-home to magazine-ready; tree cover to open space. And yes, stunning Puget Sound views. Twenty-something renters and students can enjoy spacious apartments near higher education institutions like Shoreline Community College and the University of Washington. Families can grow in size next to some of the best schools in the state. And all can enjoy the eclectic and evolving shopping and dining experiences, community events, and local art installations.
